Bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness that is characterized by extreme mood changes ranging from severe depression to mania. The emotions experienced during a manic or depressive episode are far beyond the normal ups and downs of everyday life. During a depressive period an individual may feel completely lost, but during a manic phase that same person may feel like they can do anything in the world. Living with these constantly changing mood states can wear on a person and may leave you feeling confused and alone. At Mount Regis we don’t want you to live a life full of emptiness and confusion. Bipolar disorder does not define who you are as an individual, it is only a fraction of what makes you unique.

Currently you may feel as if you are living a life full of overwhelming emotions that you have no explanation for. The staff at Mount Regis wants to help you find the answers you seek so that you can get your life back on track.

Additionally, you may realize that you have slowly been pulling away from activities you once enjoyed in the process of becoming more and more socially isolated. The staff here at Mount Regis understands how out of control you feel and we are here to help you through these tough times.

Although there is no cure, with proper support and treatment you can learn to manage your bipolar disorder symptoms and live a fulfilled life. Our recovery program will provide you with an effective treatment plan and a complete discharge plan when you are ready to leave. We want you to be successful and will do everything in our power to make that happen.

Types of Therapy

Types of therapy used to treat bipolar disorders at Mount Regis Center in Salem, VA

Mount Regis rehab center offers a number of recovery programs that use holistic approaches designed to treat the whole person. Our program for bipolar disorder provides an ideal setting where you will feel safe and supported while you begin the healing process. Some of the types of therapeutic methods we employ include medication management, group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, rational emotive therapy, family therapy, and individual therapy on an as-needed basis.

Medication management is used to help those suffering with bipolar disorder get the appropriate medication that works to manage their symptoms. The treatment team will also teach you have to effectively use your medication. While medication is an important part of the recovery process needed to maintain the symptoms of bipolar disorder we place a great emphasis on the therapeutic aspects that allow an individual to better cope with life stressors appropriately.

Most of our therapeutic work is done in small groups that are centered around a certain theme during each meeting. Our hope is that by sharing with other individuals who are going through similar experiences that you will be able to connect and learn from each other. Some of the topics we cover in group therapy include life skills, relapse prevention, and addiction.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the technique often used in treatment at Mount Regis to help you learn how to identify misconceptions and negative thoughts you may have about the world. Through this therapy you will learn how to process these emotions so that you are able to alter them into more positive ways of viewing the world. Once you have been able to change these negative thought patterns and the associated feelings, you will be able to alter your behaviors for the better.

Rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) mainly focuses on learning how to balance acceptance and tolerance while changing your thoughts and beliefs. With this therapy you will learn how to appropriately express your feelings while accepting what has occurred in the past. By realizing these things are in the past and cannot be changed you are able to allow yourself to move on.

We understand that your family is important to you and that is why we make sure to include family in the recovery process. During your stay you will have 3 family sessions per week that will help to work through any unresolved issues surrounding your condition as well as allow your family the opportunity to voice their personal emotions. We will also take the time to help your loved ones understand your bipolar disorder and how the treatment process works.

In addition to traditional therapeutic approaches, we offer a number of experiential options. These include:

  • Yoga
  • Art programming
  • Recreational programming
  • N.A. and A.A.
  • Spiritual Therapy
  • Nutritional Counseling

Rehab Aftercare

Continuing care, what comes next?

The compassionate staff here at Mount Regis is fully committed to doing whatever we can to help you be successful in your recovery and to improve your quality of life. We want to make sure that you are completely set up with an effective aftercare plan before leaving our doors so that you have no lapse in your treatment process. Our main goal is to help you re-establish the life that you want to live.

Once it has been determined that you no longer need the acute inpatient level of care, we will work with you to determine the next level of care that will work best for your needs. All steps will be worked out in order to make the transition into a new program as smooth as possible. Our day treatment program and our Intensive Outpatient Programs are less intense than our acute level program, but still offer more support than traditional outpatient therapy. These programs have been very effective for many of our clients and provide the opportunity for you stay at home while receiving care, however we do have apartments on site available for use if that is a better option for you.

In addition to our outpatient program we offer an aftercare program that is available for any alumni of our programs free of charge for a period of three months. This program is designed to help you continue along your path of recovery and to help you work through any issues that should arise. The aftercare program offers both group and individual therapy sessions.
